The Polar Code

The IMO introduced the Polar code 1 January 2017, as an International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters. The Code acknowledges that polar waters may impose additional demands on ships beyond those normally encountered. The mandatory framework for ships operating in polar waters mandates the carriage of group (GSK) and personal (PSK) survival kits based on the number of people onboard.

Survival Kits

To support the requirement for minimum 5 days survival upon escape and evacuation, the Polar Code mandates the carriage of group (GSK) and personal (PSK) survival kits based on the number of people on board.
