Small is dangerous
300 Norwegians have lost their lives at sea in the period 1990-2017. Fishermen have the most dangerous job in Norway. Fishermen operating alone onboard small fishing vessels are 6-7 times more at risk than crew onboard industrial trawlers and accounts for 66% of all fatalities in the fishing fleet. One can never guarantee against accidents at sea like capsizing, accident, collision or other accidents. The right equipment in such situations is crucial.
The temperature in Norwegian waters is closer to four than fifteen degrees most of the year. The encounter with such cold water can lead to cold shock, cooling and drowning. If the temperature in the water is below 10 degrees, you will freeze to death in a few minutes, without proper equipment. Thermal protection is the keyword. With an uninsulated immersion suit (1 hour suit), a person can stay warm and dry for up to one hour in water temperature between four and zero degrees Celsius. The best thermal protection is achieved by using an insulated immersion suit (6 hours suit). Here you have a total of 10 to 20 times greater chance of surviving in cold water than if you only have a life jacket.
It is absolutely crucial to use rescue equipment/immersion suits adapted to the activity practiced at sea. There may be work suits, suits for rescue personnel or insulated immersion suits in case of emergency.
