Group Survival Kit (GSK)

The IMO introduced the Polar code 1 January 2017, as an International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters. The Code acknowledges that polar waters may impose additional demands on ships beyond those normally encountered. The mandatory framework for ships operating in polar waters mandates the carriage of group (GSK) and personal (PSK) survival kits based on the number of people onboard.

To support the requirement for minimum 5 days survival upon escape and evacuation, the Polar Code mandates the carriage of group (GSK) and personal (PSK) survival kits based on the number of people on board. Group survival kits (GSKs) should be carried whenever a voyage is anticipated to encounter ice conditions which may prevent the lowering and operation of survival craft. GSKs should be carried to cover at least 110% of the persons on board the ship. Group survival kits should be stored so that they may be easily retrieved and deployed in an emergency situation. Any containers should be located adjacent to the survival craft and life rafts. Containers should be designed so that they may be easily moved over the ice and be float able.
